What Is a Beneficiary?

A beneficiary is a person (or sometimes an organisation) that you choose to receive benefits or payments if something happens to you.

Beneficiaries are most commonly linked to benefits such as:

  • Life insurance
  • Death‑in‑service benefits
  • Pension or retirement benefits (depending on scheme rules)

If a benefit pays out, it will usually be paid to the beneficiary or beneficiaries you’ve named.

Please see the 'How to add a Beneficiary to a Benefit' article if you wish to assign a Beneficiary to a benefit.

Why am I seeing this message?

You’re seeing this because your organisation has enabled the beneficiary feature for one or more benefits.

This may be set as either:

  • Optional: You can choose whether to add beneficiary details when selecting the benefit.
  • Mandatory: You must add this information before continuing. The relevant benefit tile will be highlighted in red to show that action is required.

If this is set as mandatory and you try to continue without completing it, you’ll see a message on the confirmation page and won’t be able to proceed until you’ve added your beneficiary.

What do I need to do?

To complete this task:

  1. Select the relevant benefit tile
  2. Review the information banner at the top of the page

3. Scroll down to Add a Beneficiary and select the + icon

4. Enter your beneficiary details
5. Choose the beneficiary and assign a percentage

6. Repeat if you want to add more than one beneficiary

7. Once completed, you’ll be able to continue with your benefit selection.
